What is the History of Bingo?

It is not strange to find out that despite the world-wide acceptance the bingo game is currently enjoying, the history of the game is still new. After all, most of us got to know the online bingo game when there was increased use of the computer in offices and homes alike. The history of bingo game dates as far back as the 16th century. In other words, previously, bingo game has been enjoyed in different forms for up to 5 centuries.
The game became very popular and Italian lottery usually known as "lo Giuoco del lotto D'Italia". Bingo then spread to the French who preferred to call it "Le Lotto" and the French aristocracy enjoyed the game very much. In the 19th century, different types of bingo, known to us today, were used as educational tools for learning multiplication tables, history and spelling. And it is still of great use today. The act of playing the bingo game helps you exercise the brain.
Lotto was well-known in Europe then, and was played on the most important occasions like carnivals. Soon, lotto changed into "Beano" ~ a game where a caller picked up numbered discs from a box and the players had to cover their numbers when called. Covering a horizontal, diagonal or vertical line on the card by a player meant that the player had won. The player would then shout "Beano" and claim the price. When a full line of a player's number was called, the player would shout "House" in a similar way that is done today when bingo is played online.
Ed Lowe was an American salesman introduced the game of Beano to his country when he met with the game at a carnival in Germany. According to popular beliefs, when Lowe was introducing the game to his friends and guests, one of the female guests mistakenly shouted "Bingo" in her excitement for winning the game. That was how "Bingo" had since been used to call the game.
News of this new game spread very fast. A priest from Pennsylvania came up with an idea to use it as a way of raising money for his church. But there was this problem of the game producing more than one winner. The confusion was tackled by Carl Leffler, A Columbia University mathematician, who came up with the 6000 numerical variations that ended up with just a winner in every bingo game played.
Today, to the credits of the people behind the discovery and improvement of bingo game, it now has over 3 million people playing the game both offline and online. The very first online bingo sites, which were UK based, came in existence in 2003. Although the game is finding itself endeared to more women than men since they make up to 70% of bingo players, it is increasingly popular with young adults of both sexes too. So, why not take your place and refuse to be left out. You have a whole lot to gain if you just try to enjoy what the game has to offer!
